Splitter for Mac. The window manager built for ultrawide screens.

Your ultrawide,
split into real displays.

Turn one wide screen into two, three or four virtual displays. New windows land where you want them, not lost in the middle. Extra windows tuck into tabs under each display, so everything you have open stays in sight.

Free to download. Every feature free for 7 days, then $9.99 once through Apple. No subscription. macOS 14 or later.

Try it for yourself.

  • Drag a title bar to another display
  • Click or drag a tab
  • Hover a tab to peek
  • Open apps from the dock

Before Splitter

No more one huge screen
with zero order.

An ultrawide has the room of two or three monitors, but macOS treats it as one big screen. Every new window piles into the middle, on top of the last one, until you can't find anything.

01

Everything opens in the middle

Every new window lands dead centre, right across the space you wanted to split. You drag and resize the same windows all day.

02

Windows hide behind windows

Browsers, chat, notes and mail, stacked on top of each other. You know it's open somewhere. Finding it is the hard part.

03

Snapping isn't organizing

Snapping tools move one window at a time. The next window still opens in the middle, and everything behind it stays a mess.

The tab bar

Nothing gets lost
behind anything again.

Every window that isn't in front waits in a tab bar under its display, like browser tabs for your apps. You can always see what's open. Hover to peek. Click to switch.

Up close: the bottom of one display.

Hover to peek

A preview of the window pops up above its tab, so you know what's there before you switch.

Click to switch

The tab slides up into the display and the window that was there takes its place in the bar.

Drag to any display

Pull a tab out of the bar and drop it on another display. It opens right there.

Like plugging in more monitors. Without the monitors.

Set it up once. From then on, every window knows where it belongs.

01

Draw your displays

Split your screen into 2, 3 or 4 virtual displays and drag the dividers to size them: two even halves, a narrow side panel for chat or music, or a wide centre.

  • Pick which one is display 1
  • Set the gap between displays and the edge margin
  • Resize on the fly: press ⌃⌥D and drag the dividers right on your screen. Squeeze a display away, or drag a new one in from the edge

02

New windows land on display 1, not the middle

Open an app and it lands on display 1, sized to fit, exactly like a second monitor. Pin the apps you always want in one place, like Claude, Messages or Spotify in a side panel, and they always open there.

  • Or keep macOS's "open in the middle" and drag to snap
  • Dialogs and file pickers always stay fully on screen

03

Extra windows become tabs

When a display already has a window, the older one slides into a tab in the bar under that display, like browser tabs for your apps. Nothing hides behind anything. Everything you have open is one glance and one click away.

  • Hover a tab to see a preview
  • Click a tab to bring it to the front
  • Minimize a window and it comes back to the same display

04

Drag anything anywhere

Drag a window by its title bar, or drag a tab straight out of the bar, onto any display. It takes over that display, the window that was there slides into a tab, and the display you came from brings up its next tab.

  • Drag to the top edge for full screen
  • Hold ⇧ to drop a window anywhere

Chat in the side panel, mail on the right. Pinned apps always open on their display.

Remembers where things go

Minimize, hide or switch Spaces, and every window comes back to the display it belongs to.

Fast and featherweight

A native Swift app. No Electron, no background polling, about the memory of one browser tab.

A tab bar under every display

Optional permanent bars keep every display the same height, so your layout always lines up.

Make it yours

Dark, light, system-matched or any colour you like for the tabs, adjustable gaps and margins, 2 to 8 windows per display.

Keyboard shortcuts

Send windows between displays, toggle full screen and flip through tabs without the mouse.

Fills empty displays

Move a window away and Splitter can fill the gap with the window that was behind it.

Private by design

No account, no tracking, nothing leaves your Mac. Tab previews are never saved.

Leaves other screens alone

Splitter arranges the screen you choose. Your laptop or a second monitor works as usual.

Made for people
with a lot going on.

Built with ultrawides in mind, useful on any Mac screen. A 27" monitor splits nicely in two, and even on a MacBook the tab bar keeps every window in sight.

Ultrawide owners

Get the "two monitors" feeling you bought the screen for, on 34", 38", 40" and 49" displays.

ADHD and busy brains

Out of sight shouldn't mean out of mind. Every open window stays visible as a tab, and things land in the same place every time.

Developers, designers and analysts

Editor in the middle, browser on the right, chat and docs in a side panel. Your setup, every single day.

Questions, answered.

What is Splitter?

Splitter is a window manager for Mac built for ultrawide monitors. It splits one wide screen into two, three or four virtual displays that behave like separate monitors. New windows open on the display you choose, and when a display already has a window, the older one becomes a tab in a bar under that display, so nothing ever hides behind anything else.

Do I need an ultrawide screen?

No. Splitter is built with ultrawides in mind, but the problem it solves is universal: windows piling up on top of each other and getting lost. On a 27" or 32" monitor, split the screen into two displays. Even on a MacBook, one display with a tab bar keeps every open window visible and one click away, instead of buried behind the window you're using.

How do I stop windows opening in the middle of my ultrawide monitor on Mac?

macOS treats an ultrawide as one big screen, so it centres new windows. With Splitter, every new window opens on your display 1 (or on the display an app is pinned to), already sized to fit, exactly like a second monitor. If you prefer, keep "open in the middle" and drag windows to snap them instead.

Can I split an ultrawide into two or three virtual monitors on macOS?

Yes, that's exactly what Splitter does. Choose 2, 3 or 4 displays, drag the dividers to size them (a narrow side panel works well for chat or music), pick which one is display 1, and set the gap and margins. Change the layout any time and every window follows.

How is Splitter different from Magnet, Rectangle or macOS window tiling?

Those tools snap one window into a position when you ask them to, and everything else stays where it was. Splitter keeps a permanent layout: new windows open in a set place, apps can be pinned to a display, extra windows become tabs instead of piling up, and dragging a window or a tab onto a display moves it there while the rest of your screen stays organized.

Is it good for ADHD or for people who keep too many windows open?

That's who it was built for. Every open window is either on a display or visible as a tab under it, so you never dig through overlapping windows looking for something. Things open in the same place every time, which makes your desktop predictable and calm.

Will Splitter slow down my Mac?

No. It's a small native Swift app that reacts to window events instead of constantly scanning. It uses about as much memory as a single browser tab and sits idle when you're not moving windows.

What permissions does it need?

Accessibility, which macOS requires for any app that moves and resizes windows. Screen Recording is optional and only used to show a live preview when you hover a tab. Nothing is ever recorded, saved or sent anywhere.

Does it work with multiple monitors?

Splitter arranges one screen, your widest by default, or whichever you choose. Other screens, like your laptop display, keep working exactly as they do now.

How much does it cost?

Splitter is a free download on the Mac App Store, with every feature free for 7 days. After that, a one-time $9.99 in-app purchase through Apple unlocks it for good. No subscription, and updates are included.

Where do I get it?

On the Mac App Store. Apple handles the download, the payment and updates, and once you unlock Splitter it works on every Mac signed in with your Apple ID.
