# Splitter Website: https://getsplitter.com > Splitter is a window manager for macOS built for ultrawide monitors. It splits one wide screen into 2, 3 or 4 virtual displays that behave like separate monitors, opens new windows on the display you choose instead of the middle of the screen, and turns extra windows into tabs under each display so nothing hides behind anything else. ## The problem it solves - macOS treats an ultrawide monitor (34", 38", 40", 49") as one huge screen, so new windows open centred and the screen never feels like two or three monitors. - Windows pile up on top of each other; users lose track of what is open and spend time digging for windows. - Snapping tools (Magnet, Rectangle, BetterSnapTool, macOS's built-in tiling) move one window at a time. The next window still opens in the middle, and windows behind stay disorganised. ## How Splitter works - **Virtual displays:** split the screen into 2, 3 or 4 displays and drag dividers to size them (for example, a narrow side panel plus two equal displays). Choose which one is display 1. Gaps and margins are adjustable. - **New windows open on display 1**, sized to fit, like a second monitor. Optionally keep macOS's "open in the middle" behaviour instead. - **Pinned apps:** pin apps (for example Claude, Messages, Spotify) to a display and they always open there. - **Tabs under each display:** when a display already has a window, the older one becomes a tab in a bar under that display, like browser tabs for apps. Hover a tab to preview it, click to bring it to the front. - **Drag anything anywhere:** drag a window by its title bar, or drag a tab out of the bar, onto any display. It becomes the front window there, the previous one becomes a tab, and the display it came from brings up its next tab. - **Remembers placement:** minimized, hidden or other-Space windows return to the display they came from. - **Other details:** keyboard shortcuts (⌃⌥ + arrows, numbers, Tab), drag to the top edge for full screen, hold ⇧ to drop a window freely, dialogs and file pickers always kept on screen, dark/light/system or custom-colour tab styles, an on-screen adjust mode (⌃⌥D) to resize displays and add or remove them by dragging, optional permanent tab bar so every display is the same height. ## Good fit for - People with ultrawide or super-ultrawide monitors on a Mac. - Anyone on a regular Mac screen who loses windows behind other windows: a 27" or 32" monitor works well split into two displays, and even a MacBook benefits from one display with a tab bar. An ultrawide is not required. - Heavy multitaskers with many apps open at once: developers, designers, analysts, traders, writers. - People with ADHD or anyone who wants a calm, predictable desktop where nothing gets lost. - Windows users switching to Mac who miss Snap Layouts. ## Facts - Platform: macOS 14 Sonoma or later. - Native Swift app; lightweight (similar memory to one browser tab); no Electron. - Permissions: Accessibility (required to move windows); Screen Recording optional (only for tab previews). - Privacy: no account, no tracking, no data collected or sent. - Price: free download on the Mac App Store; every feature free for 7 days, then a one-time $9.99 in-app purchase through Apple.
